The Covington County Chapter of the American Red Cross will begin accepting applications in three locations on Wed., Dec. 28, for those wishing to apply for winter heating assistance.

Funding for the assistance is provided through the Project Share program, the energy assistance program for low-income elderly or disabled individuals. It is a voluntary program, established by the utility companies in the state of Alabama, and funded through contributions from the utilities and private individuals who choose to donate $1 or $2 on their monthly utility bills.

“You can pick those up at the Red Cross office here on Hillcrest Drive,” said Don Johnson, the chapter’s interim executive director. “If you’re outside of Andalusia, those applications can be picked up at the Florala and Opp senior service centers.”

Johnson said once an application is submitted, an appointment will be given for an interview, which will begin the week of Jan. 9.

As the organization responsible for administering Project SHARE funds, a Red Cross representative will interview applicants seeking financial assistance in paying their energy bills.

To qualify for assistance, the family income must be within certain guidelines depending on the size of the household. In addition, the head of the household must meet one of the following eligibility criteria:

• be 62 or older; or

• receiving a total disability check.

For those who qualify, payments will be made directly to the energy supplier. For more information, contact the Covington County American Red Cross at 334-428-2680.
