Boys and girls basketball teams from Alabama and Florida will converge on Friday and Saturday for the annual Alabama-Florida Shootout at Pleasant Home.

The PHS and Florala boys and girls varsity squads will play Florida teams Baker and Laurel Hill in the tournament, which is sponsored to provide a little competition on the border line, PHS boys coach Jerry Davis said.

“We’re just very fortunate we’ve got Laurel Hill and Baker playing in the tournament,” he said. “They’re both very competitive.”

As long as the tournament has existed, there hasn’t been an Alabama boys team to beat a Florida boys team, Davis said.

“We just like to be able to put our chest out a little bit, and pull one off this time,” he said. “Who knows what’ll happen. That’s the advantage to these type of tournaments.”

The tournament tips off tomorrow at 3 p.m. between the Baker girls and Florala girls teams. Then, at 4:30, the Baker boys will face the Florala boys.

Pleasant Home’s girls will face Laurel Hill’s girls at 6 p.m., and the PHS boys will end the day against Laurel Hill’s boys at 7:30 p.m.

Games on Saturday will begin at noon between Florala’s girls and Laurel Hill’s girls, Florala’s boys and Laurel Hill’s boys at 1:30 p.m., Pleasant Home’s girls and Baker’s girls at 3 p.m., and Pleasant Home’s boys and Baker’s boys at 4:30 in the final game of the tournament.

Admission is $5 per person per day. Each day will have four games played.

“We’re looking forward to it,” Davis said. “We’d like to see the fans come out as much as possible. A lot of people are always looking to do something during that time of the year, too.”
