Covington County Probate Judge Ben Bowden has been reappointed by Alabama House Speaker Mike Hubbard to the Legislative Oversight Committee (LOC) for vehicle license plates.
The LOC is responsible for reviewing and approving new applications for specialty license plates for the State of Alabama.
Alabama law allows charitable organizations to design new license plates and request production of these plates by the Department of Corrections for use on Alabama vehicles. The requests must meet certain criteria and must also acquire a certain number of “pre-commitments” to purchase before the plates are printed and sold. The LOC’s job is to thoroughly review the applications and approve those that satisfy the requirements of the law.
The LOC meets at least semi-annually to review new and pending applications. Currently, there are over 150 specialty plates available for purchase in the State.
