Circuit Judge Lex Short has increased the bond by nearly 10-fold for the man accused of raping an elderly Opp woman Friday.
Corey Darnell “Fred” Matthews, a four-time convicted felon out on parole, allegedly broke in and raped the woman at knifepoint. Matthews fled the scene, but was located hours later by Opp Police Department officers and charged with burglary I, rape I, theft of property III, possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.
He was originally being held on a $106,000 bond; however, because of the nature and severity of the crime, Short increased that amount to $1 million Monday.
Matthews remains incarcerated in the Covington County Jail, under a hold by the Alabama Board of Pardons and Parole.
