Straughn had three varsity players score in double figures to help lift the Tigers to a 44-37 victory over Brantley on Saturday at SHS.

“We played to our tempo of the game,” SHS coach Rusty Andrews said. “We played fundamentally sound basketball, and limited them to one shot and out. We handled their pressure real well.”

Hobie Hughes had 15 points and seven rebounds; JD Driver had 11 points, six rebounds and five assists; and Avery Driver had 10 points, seven rebounds and four steals.

Andrews said the Tigers (7-11, 2-3 in Class 4A, Area 3) were in a 2-3 zone on defense, and “made sure they took one shot and only one (shot).”

“We did a good job of rebounding on the defensive end,” he said.

The Tigers have defeated the Bulldogs for the first time this season with Saturday’s victory.

OJ Guice led Brantley with nine points.

Additionally, Straughn’s B-team won 29-25.

In varsity girls action, the Lady Tigers beat the Lady Bulldogs 40-49 in over time.

Brittany Driver led SHS with 17 points.

SHS tied the game at 36-all after a Janelle Nurse 3-pointer at the end of regulation.

In overtime, Lady Tigers were down by two and guard Jacie Williamson hit a 3-pointer to seal the win.

Straughn will play host to Ashford tonight to end its regular-season area play.

B-team tips off at 4:30 p.m.
