Campaigns get $32K in January

Campaign finance reports filed in recent days show the most money being contributed and spent in the races for probate judge and circuit clerk, the two most high-profile races on the Covington County ballot.

Contributions for Ben Bowden, incumbent candidate for probate judge, have totaled $11,820 over the past five months. The total includes $2,200 the candidate contributed to his campaign.

Challenger Lee Enzor filed his first financial disclosure report in January, and reported $7,800 in contributions, including $3,500 he contributed.

In the circuit clerk’s race, contributions for Amy Jones have totaled $9,084. The contributions have come mainly from members of her family and her law firm.

Her opponent, Stephanie Stewart Cotton, who entered the race on the last day of qualifying, has raised $5,800, including personal contributions to her campaign.

In the race for county commission chairman, Kylan Lewis has reported the most campaign activity. Lewis reported a balance of $4,758 and contributions of $180 for his January report, while Bill Godwin reported a beginning balance of $1,829 and contributions of $500. Incumbent Lynn Sasser reported no contributions and no expenses.

Following are highlights of the reports filed Jan. 31, 2012, by other candidates.

In the race for District 1, county commission:

• David Ellis had a beginning balance of $2,009 and reported $270 in contributions. He spent $487.

• Ken Northey had a beginning balance of $4,000, reported no contributions, and spent $851.

In the race for District 2, county commission:

• Joe Barton had a beginning balance of $751.25, received $1,675 in contributions, and spent $2,179.

• Randall McCart had a beginning balance of $997, received $100, and spent $150.

• Tony Wells had a beginning balance of $2,500, received contributions of $500, contributed $3,500 to his campaign, and spent $2,676.

In the race for District 3, county commission:

• Harold Elmore had contributions of $2,000 and no expenses.

• Joe Bush had a beginning balance of $2,480, had contributions of $350, and spent $1,052.

In the race for District 4, county commission:

• Carl Turman had contributions of $170 and spent $661.

• Alan Lucas had a beginning balance of $682, contributions of $500, and spent $1,016.
