Opp outscored Daleville 14-4 in the second period to lead 28-18 at half time and held on late as the Lady Bobcats went on to claim a 61-40 Class 3A sub regional win on Thursday night at OHS.

The Lady Bobcats didn’t get off to a good start on the defensive front, OHS coach Allison Gregory said.

“I think that was one of the weakest defensive starts we’ve played all year,” Gregory said. “We couldn’t get anything going.

“(Daleville’s) Rone Frances, she had eight of the 14 points in the first period,” she said. “She was scoring it well.”

Daleville and Opp were tied 14-14 after the first period.

In the second period, the Lady Bobcats went back to a zone look on defense, Gregory said.

“We got better rebounding position, and we held her (Frances) to two points in the second period,” she said.

With this victory, the Lady Bobcats (16-7) earn a berth to play in the South Regional Tournament next week in Mobile. Opp will play Montgomery Academy at noon on Thursday in the semifinals at the Mitchell Center on USA’s campus.

After half time, Opp went on to outscore DHS 16-12 in the third period and 17-10 in the fourth period.

Saquaya Lane led Opp with 15 points, and Asia Edwards chipped in 13 points. Nisha Stoudemire added nine points, and was 7-for-8 from the free throw line.

“We started really getting the ball inside,” Gregory said about the second half. “We had miss matches underneath and took advantaged of that. We beat the ball inside, got fouled and hit the free throws.”
