Motorcycle riders gear up for the Opp Rotary-Rattler Charity Ride the last weekend of the month.

Organizer Gregg Ramer said last’s year inaugural run had 22 participants, but they hope that more will turn out for this year’s event.

The poker run will begin at the Rattlesnake Rodeo, which is held at Opp’s Channel-Lee Stadium and will end at the Senior Citizen Complex next to the stadium.

“We do this every year to raise money for our Rotary Club,” he said. “We don’t have any of our key fundraiser anymore, so this is it. The money raised goes to different charities. Locally, we give to Sav-A-Life, Crossover Ministries, and we help support Camp AASCA.

“We’re actually raising money to put a roof on the dining hall there,” he said. “We’re constantly trying to give back to our community. That’s why we do it.”

Additionally, Ramer said the club’s mission extends across the borders.

“Our local club has joined other Rotary Clubs to be part of a bank for South American people,” he said. “What we do is give a $250 loan to start a business, and we lend out the money for business at very low interest rates.”

Ramer said anyone can join the race along the way, which will run from Opp through Babbie to Andalusia and Florala and back to Opp.

“This year as long as you are back by 3 p.m. you can join it any time,” he said.

Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. on Sat., March 31.

Cost is $20 per hand and the winning hand will win $250. Every hand gets one admission to the rodeo, and there will also be a 50/50 drawing.
