There’s a candy and cigarette thief loose in Covington County.

Sheriff Dennis Meeks said Monday that Sheriff’s Office investigators are looking into two overnight burglaries.

“There was one at Hart’s Country Store on Antioch Road and another at Joe’s Grocery in Rose Hill,” he said. “Both establishments have signs of the same method of entry – a busted front glass area. Similar items were also taken from the businesses to include, a small amount of change, ≈cash bills, cigarettes – mostly Newports – and a large amount of candy products.”

Meeks said no arrests have been made at this time, but warns business owners of threat of a break-in.

“While there’s really not a lot that can be done to prevent a crime of this nature, store owners and property owners can install a security camera system that could help deter these types of criminal activity.”

Those with information concerning these burglaries is asked to contact the Sheriff’s Office at 334-428-2640 or one’s local law enforcement agency.
