Andalusia’s Burkett featured artist at OCAC

Andalusia’s Dot Burkett is the featured artist this month at the Opp Cultural Arts Center.

This Sunday, Burkett will be honored with an artists’ reception at the Center.

“Everyone is invited to walk through the open doors of the (OCAC) into the creative world of Dot Burkett,” said OCAC spokesperson Peggy Linton. “Meet the artist, take you rtime enjoying the exhibit of 35 paintings, and have a glass of punch during the reception in Dot’s honor.

“Dot is a versatile artist whose primary medium is acrylic,” she said. “Her works portray still life, landscapes, portraits and abstracts. She began painting at an early age and pursued a career in art by earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in art education from the University of South Alabama and through teaching art in public and private school systems as well as the Lower Alabama Arts Coalition and in her own studios.”

Burkett has been a resident of Andalusia for the past six years, where she was the coordinator of “Absolutely Andalusia: Then and Now – A Gallery of Art, which showcased the history of Andalusia in paintings as part of Homecoming 2010.

As part of the event, Burkett and husband, Roger LeCompte, published a book featuring the artists and their works.

Linton said Burkett’s painting have been featured at OCAC juried art shows, the LAAC gallery, “Art Off the Wall” and more.

“She has won many awards through Alabama and Florida,” she said. “Dot welcomes commissions.”

Burkett’s paintings will be on exhibit at the OCAC gallery at 107 North Main Street in Opp, Monday through Friday 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

Sunday’s reception will be held from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m.
