Ten softball teams will compete in Andalusia’s annual high school tournament, which begins tonight at the Dwight Mikel Athletic Complex.

Andalusia, Straughn, Opp and Pleasant Home are the four local teams participating in the tournament.

“For us, it’s our opening tournament — it’s the first one we’re playing this season,” AHS coach Teresa Herring said. “So, we’re just really excited. With the Andalusia tournament, we’ve got it at home and we’re here.

“We open up with a big game (tonight) against Straughn,” she said. “They’re going to be real excited about that.”

Additionally, Alma Bryant, Eufaula, Jackson, Kinston, Rehobeth and UMS-Wright are in the tournament as well.

Each team will be guaranteed three games, and the tournament will begin tonight with games at 5 p.m. between Andalusia/Straughn; Opp/Alma Bryant; and Kinston/Rehobeth.

“Really, we’ve got teams from all over,” Herring said. “It’s really spread out. We got our locals in here, too.”

Then there will be 6:15 games between Eufaula and the winner of Opp/Alma Bryant; Jackson and the winner of Kinston/Rehobeth; and UMS-Wright and Pleasant Home.

There will also be three loser’s bracket games set at 7:30 tonight.

Action will then pick back up at 9 a.m. with the first two games of the loser’s bracket. The winner’s bracket games will begin at 11:30 a.m.

The championship is slated for 4:30 p.m. tomorrow.

“We’re just trying to work on us,” Herring said about any possible match ups. “We’re going to take anybody we face as a challenge, and improve on those things that we do — not necessarily what the other teams are doing.

“If we play defense, and we hit the ball, then we’re going to be there in the end,” she said.
