An Opp woman pleaded guilty Wednesday to stealing nearly $40,000 while employed at the Opp Veterinary Hospital.

Julie Blair Calhoun, 38, pled to second-degree theft of property, a Class C felony, in Covington County Circuit Court. The state attorney general’s office handled the case, which showed that the theft occurred while Calhoun was employed as the office’s secretary and office manager.

According to state prosecutors, Calhoun stole approximately $39,736 from the Opp Veterinary Hospital during a period that began in 2005 and lasted until she was fired in 2007.

Calhoun was sentenced to five years of probation and ordered to pay full restitution in the amount of $39,736.

Attorney General Luther Strange thanked the Opp Police Department for its work in this case. He also commended Assistant Attorney General Pete Smyczek of his Public Corruption and White Collar Crime Division and Special Agents of the Attorney General’s Investigations Division.
