The Covington County District Attorney’s Office is warning local merchants to be on the lookout for a serial bad check writer.

Investigator Max Smith with the office’s bad check unit said Monday, 50-year-old Leon Weaver was arrested last week on 24 counts of negotiating a worthless instrument. Smith said while Weaver was booked into the county jail under a $24,000 bond, he was immediately bonded out and released from jail.

“But, we keep getting checks on him nearly every single day,” Smith said. “He’s out on bond, and I’m afraid he’s the type to keep writing bad checks, so merchants need to be on the lookout and not accept any checks from him.”

As of Monday, Smith said that merchants had turned in a total of 37 bad checks passed by Weaver, totaling $2,014.76.
