All full-time employees in the Opp City School System were awarded a one-time, 2 percent across-the-board bonus Tuesday.

Superintendent Michael Smithart said the monies were given because employees “well-deserved it and to show our appreciation.”

Chief Financial Officer Linda Banks said it will cost the school system about $130,000 for the 2 percent on the salaries plus Social Security, Medicare and unemployment.

Banks said employees have seen their retirement contribution rates increase from 5 percent to 7.25 percent with another increase .25 percent scheduled for Oct. 1.

The bonus will help offset this increase and shows appreciation to the employees, she said.

Employees will receive a 2 percent bonus before taxes, she said.

Smithart was not included among those who will receive the bonus.

“I’m very pleased to make this motion,” board member Cheryl Graves said.

After meeting extensively in closed session, the board also voted to renew Smithart’s contract for four years.

Smithart’s base salary, $101,000, will remain the same; however, the board will cover his medical and retirement benefits, $3,892 and $7,332 respectively.
