A National Medal of Honor Day Memorial Service honoring the family members and personal sacrifice of Florala’s Army Sgt. Rodney J. Evans will be held Sunday.

The event is being hosted by VFW Post 6622 in Opp and is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. at the Rodney J. Evans Memorial Building, Florala State Park, Florala.

The Patriot Guard Riders will be escorting family members to the site, and food and fellowship will follow.

Sgt. Evans was killed while serving as a squad leader in a reconnaissance sweep near the Tay Ninh Province in the Republic of Vietnam on July 18, 1969. He was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for “conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life and beyond the call of duty.”
