The Andalusia Board of Education approved the 2012-2013 academic calendar Monday night, assuming no legislative action is taken to create a mandated school year.

Under the approved calendar, school will begin Aug. 6 for students.

In the first semester, students will be out of school on Sept. 3 for Labor Day; Oct. 12 for inservice; Oct. 15 for a weather day; Nov. 12 for Veterans Day; Nov. 19-23 for Thanksgiving holidays; Dec. 20-Jan. 2 for Christmas holidays.

Students will return on Jan. 7 for the second semester.

Students will be out Jan. 21 for MLK Day; Feb. 18 for winter holiday; March 15 weather day; April 1-5 for spring break; and students will dismiss for summer on May 23.

“Our calendar is almost identical to the county’s,” Superintendent Ted Watson said. “This calendar is subject to change is the legislature mandates the start and finish date for state schools.”

A legislative committee will discuss a mandated school calendar bill for consideration when the legislature returns from break, long after Alabama’s public school districts will have calendars in place.

The Alabama Legislature, for the past three years, has considered legislation for the start date in schools, but it hasn’t been mandated.

That would change, if it becomes law.

Under the proposed bill, school could start no sooner than two weeks before Labor Day and end the Friday before Memorial Day.
