AHS holds 33rd annual basketball banquet

Andalusia’s Lady Bulldogs, along with the boys team and cheerleaders, were honored Monday night at the 33rd annual basketball banquet at the Bulldog Bistro.
The Lady Bulldogs finished a record-setting 28-win streak season as the Class 4A state runner up. Andalusia finished 30-3 overall and won the regular season area championship, the area championship, the south regional championship and the state semifinals over No. 1 Good Hope.
Additionally, the Lady Bulldogs were ranked No. 13 in the Alabama Sports Writers Association’s Super 25 poll that was released on Sunday.
AHS coach Bennie Shellhouse handed out individual awards, and afterward, letter awards and a replica of the state runner up trophy to each player on the team.
The captains were Alexis Horton and Shi’Amber Townsend; the leader in scoring, assists, steals and offensive most valuable player award went to Horton; the leading rebounder was Townsend; the defensive stopper award went to Alectricia Barnes; the sixth woman award went to Latrexius Trawick; the leading shot blocker award went to Tyleshia Malcolm; the biggest impact player award went to Alison Daniels; the newcomer award went to Alexis Lawrence; and the most improved player award went to Shandricka Thompkins.
The team managers and scorekeepers, Kourtnee Woods, Kristin Evans and Omarria McGee were also recognized for their efforts to the team.
Horton and Townsend were also recognized for their selection to the Class 4A girls basketball All-State first and second teams, respectively.
In boys basketball, AHS coach Richard Robertson recognized each player and urged the younger players coming back to realize what they can do to succeed in the coming years.
The Bulldogs finished their season in the semifinals of the Class 4A boys South Regional Tournament in Mobile. Andalusia’s only tournament championship this season was the Class 4A, Area 3 championship over Headland.
Individual awards were given out to players, but Robertson recognized Jacard Townsend, who made the Class 4A boys basketball All-State first team.
The highest GPA award went to Josh Doster; the most courageous award went to Sam Byrd; the newcomer award went to Lakelyus “Fathead” Adams; the most dependable award went to Joe Flowers; the most improved player award went to Niguel Jones; the team captains were Flowers, Jones and Townsend; and the awards for the highest free throw percentage, field goal percentage, rebounds, scoring and most valuable player went to Townsend.
For the cheerleader squad, the best all around cheerleader award went to Susie Watson, who also won the highest GPA award. The spirit award went to Courtney Finley.
