At a membership recruitment meeting on Fri., March 30, the Andalusia Civitan Club recognized and honored longtime member, Curtis Thomasson, by naming him a Civitan Fellow.
The action involves the club making a $1,000 contribution to the Civitan International Foundation and presenting Thomasson with an engraved plaque and lapel pin signifying the award.
The plaque reads as follows: “Foundation Fellow—Curtis Thoma-sson is hereby honored as a Fellow of the Civitan International Research Center for extraordinary contributions in leadership and community service.”
The Foundation donations are designed to specifically fund future academic scholarships, and each year Civitan International awards dozens of them.
Thomasson has been an active member of the Andalusia Civitan Club for 42 years during which he served in all offices for the club.
In addition, he is active on the district level where he has served the Alabama-West Florida Civitan District in numerous roles.
These include the offices of lt. governor, district director, and as chairman for campus civitan for many years including the 2011-2012 year.
For his services he has been named Civitan of the Year and presented the Club Honor Key and the District Honor Key on three different occasions.
Thomasson joined the unique service organization in 1970 upon being asked to help organize a Civitan club at the new LBW Junior College.
The LBW Collegiate Civitan Club was chartered April 20, 1970, with an impressive ceremony at the StarLite Restaurant.
Thomasson continued as the faculty adviser through his 27-year tenure at LBW and for several years beyond his retirement.
The current LBW Campus Club, which is now advised by LBW Instructor Kristy White, remains active, and is the only college-based club to have been active continuously in the entire Civitan Intern-ational organization’s history.
Thoma-sson expresses extreme pride in the LBW Campus Club as well as the Andalusia Civitan Club whose motto is “Builders of Good Citizenship.”
