Nine players from Florala’s track and field team will visit Tuscaloosa on Friday and Saturday for the Class 1A sectionals.

Matthew Gibbs will compete in the shot, and FHS coach Daniel Allison said he’s confident that Gibbs will make it to state.

“His best is is 44 feet,” Allison said.

Additionally, Hunter Oswald will compete in the shot.

Florala’s John Bess, Erik Vega and Jonathan Burleson will compete in the javelin throw, and Austin McNeil will compete in the long jump and will also run the 400-meter run.

On the girls side, Angela Radford will compete in the shot put; and Mariah Thompson and Paige Irwin will compete in the javelin throw. Irwin is also slated to compete in the 800-meter run.

The first event is on Friday with the discus throw, and all other events will be held on Saturday.

The state tournament will be May 4-5 in Selma.
