Bill Godwin carried three more voting boxes than his opponent in his 15-vote win over Kylan Lewis in Tuesday’s Republican primary election runoff.
Reports from the county’s probate judge’s office showed Godwin pulled in a win in 16 of the 29 of the county’s voting precinct boxes. The 30th box is set aside for provisional ballots; however, none were cast.
Lewis took the remaining 13 boxes by dominating in each of Andalusia’s three boxes, as well as in Lockhart, Red Level, Buck Creek, the Gantt area and Carolina. He also edged out Godwin in the number of absentee votes received.
Godwin claimed the remaining boxes throughout the county, including Opp, Babbie, the Florala and Pleasant Home communities, Rose Hill, River Falls, Libertyville and Beulah.
In the race for District 2 Commissioner, Joe Barton claimed victory – despite winning fewer boxes than his opponent, Randall McCart.
Barton claimed 14 boxes to McCart’s 15. He, too, dominated in each of Andalusia’s three boxes, the Harmony area, Florala and Red Oak, and the entirety of the Gantt/Straughn area. He edged out McCart in absentee ballots cast.
McCart held the popular vote in each of the Opp areas, Lockhart, Wing and Pleasant Home, the Red Level areas, Sanford, Carolina, Libertyville and Beulah.
In the state race for the Republican nomination for Public Service Commission President, Twinkle Andress Cavanaugh faced Chip Brown. Cavanaugh, who took every box in Covington County, will now face the Democrat incumbent, Lucy Baxley, in November.
