FHS, OHS track teams going to state

Eight local track and field athletes qualified for the state tournament this weekend at last weekend’s Class 1A and 3A sectional meets in Tuscaloosa and Montgomery.
Florala’s Matthew Gibbs finished first in the shot put event; Jonathan Burleson finished first in the javelin throw; John Bess finished second in the javelin throw and third in the discus event; Erik Vega finished fourth in the javelin throw; Paige Irwin finished third in the 800-meter run and second in the javelin throw; Mariah Thompson finished second in the javelin throw; Opp’s Derek Savage finished fifth in the discus throw; and Myeke Boyd finished fifth in the 100-meter dash to qualify for the state track and field meet.
The meet will be held in Selma at Memorial Stadium on Friday and Saturday.
