Those interested in running for a municipal office in August should take note of a few important dates.

This year’s election is set for Aug. 28, with an Oct. 9 runoff date.

Candidates could start raising money for their election on Aug. 28, 2011. Once a candidate establishes a principal campaign committee pursuant to the Fair Campaign Practices Act, the committee must file monthly campaign disclosure reports. Those reports are due on the last day of each month up to the month preceding the election, at which point the reports are due weekly on Fridays leading up to the election.

Municipalities must make any changes to voting district lines by May 28.

Mayors must give notice of the upcoming election by the first Tuesday in July, which is July 3. Candidates can begin qualifying once that notice is published. The last day to qualify for office is July 17.

Thus far the following have announced they will seek re-election or election in a municipal election:

• Andalusia Mayor Earl Johnson;

• Andalusia City Councilman Terry Powell in District 5.

• Andalusia City Councilwoman Hazel Griffin in District 3.

• Opp Mayor H.D. Edgar, as well as John Bartholomew and Jimmy Rogers.

All the council seats in all cities and towns are up for re-election, and school board seats in District 2 and District 4 in Andalusia and District 3 and District 5 in Opp.
