New industry considers Opp

The city of Opp is still looking for a tenant for its spec building, nearly a year after its completion.

The $1 million, 40,000-square foot spec building is located inside Opp’s Industrial Park.

Opp Mayor H.D. Edgar told the council Monday night that a plastics company that was eyeing the building elected to go to Auburn, instead.

“It would have brought 35 jobs,” he said. “We have another company that is looking and it would bring about the same amount of jobs.”

Edgar said the city has placed to building on the Alabama Development Office’s website in order to advertise the city has space available.

Edgar said officials with the “tire shredding operation” should make a decision within the next 60 days.

“I’ll give you more facts as I know it,” he said.

Councilman Mickey Crew asked if the Covington County Economic Development Commission has purchased anything for Opp to help bring industry into the city.

“They haven’t purchased anything, but they have helped us,” Edgar said.
