Music camp centers on Paul, Silas

Get ready to shake, rattle and roll at the First Baptist Church this summer.

Minister of Music Dwight Crigger said the FBC’s community music camp is set to kick off June 11-15 with “Jailhouse Rock: Shake, Rattle and Roll.”

“It’s going to be a lot of fun,” Crigger said. “It’s about Paul and Silas. It’s an upbeat musical that teaches children about our freedom in Christ as believers.”

The musical opens as the children embark on a fun week of hiking and swimming at Camp Koinoinia.

But much to their disappointment, when they arrive, a torrential downpour leaves them “jailed up” in the mess hall.

While the children are inside, the camp director and the junior counselors teach them about Paul, Silas and Peter’s experiences being “locked up,” and how prayer and praise makes a difference.

The musical styles range from rhythm and blues, rock ‘n roll, ballad and rap.

The musical is for those who have completed the first grade through the sixth grade, he said.

“Anybody who falls into that category can come,” Crigger said. “You don’t have to be a member of First Baptist Church.”

Last year, Crigger said, there were about 40 participants, but organizers would love to see the program grow.

The camp will be held from 8:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m.

Cost is $50 and that includes supplies and a T-shirt, but campers need to bring a sack lunch.

Crigger said he’d like to have a count by the Friday before, so he can make sure there are enough supplies; however, those who come on Monday will not be turned away.

Children will perform the musical at 6 p.m. on June 15.
