The Andalusia City Council on Tuesday agreed to purchase $125,000 in exercise equipment for the adult activity center.
The proposal includes four treadmills, four elliptical trainers and two recumbent bikes for a cardio room, as well 14 pieces of equipment for a strength training room.
City clerk John Thompson, who presented the plan to the council, said the facility will be open during regular business hours, and that access cards similar to those used in hotels will be available for those who prefer to have access before and after hours.
Mayor Earl Johnson said the city realized the importance of this after LBW recently increased the rates it charges for access to its facility.
“We have a number of people going out to the college,” he said. “LBW has gone up on rates significantly.”
The council authorized Thompson to finance the project.
In other business, the council:
• Formally renewed its line of credit at CCB Community Bank. The line is used for cash flow issues, Johnson said, and must be paid off each year.
• Approved an interest-free loan of $155,000 through PowerSouth and ADECA for lights at Johnson Park.
• Was told the Utilities Board has received a $36,000 grant from FEMA to apply to the purchase of a generator for one of the city’s sewerage lift stations.
• Approved special events alcohol license for the LBW Foundation for its June fundraiser.
• Agreed to donate some salvage metal to Forever Reins, an equestrian program for handicapped children.
