McKenzie sweeps Red Level

McKenzie’s junior varsity and varsity teams defeated Red Level Friday night in the annual spring jamboree game, 34-8 and 16-6, respectively.

During the jamboree game, the junior varsity played the first and third quarters and the varsity played the second and fourth quarters.

McKenzie struck out first with 10:06 left in the first quarter. When Condi Pugh scored a touchdown and Ty Adams’ extra point was good.

A short time later, McKenzie’s Jay Womack took a hand off up the middle to score the Tigers’ second TD of the night. And Adams’ PAT was good, putting the Butler County Tigers up 14-0.

Red Level’s Draven Mitchell scored the JV’s lonely TD of the night and Kyle Hall completed a two-point conversion, putting the score 14-8.

McKenzie fired back with another TD from Pugh, and Chris Shuford’s two-point conversion put them up 22-8 at the end of the first quarter.

Pugh and Shufurd each added another TD for McKenzie in the third quarter, sealing the win.

 

Varsity McKenzie 16 Red Level 6

Red Level struck first in varsity action when Caleb Varner scored, but the point after was no good.

McKenzie answered with a TD from Herrington Bonnett and the two-point conversion from Sawyer Kendrick was good, putting McKenzie up by 2.

McKenzie scored again putting the Tigers up 16-6 before the second quarter was up.

The fourth quarter was scoreless.

Red Level head coach Tony Ingram told his players afterward, that he saw “what can be.”

“I saw a spark of greatness out there,” he said. “We have got to get in the weight room. You have got to want it bad enough.”

Red Level will kick off its regular season on Aug. 31 in Butler, Ala. against Choctaw County. McKenzie will kick off its season on Aug. 31 in Highland Home.
