Alabama will have three fewer daily newspapers this fall, when The Birmingham News, the Press-Register of Mobile and The Huntsville Times limit print publication to Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays. The Press-Register is the only of the three newspapers delivered locally.

Newhouse News announced yesterday the formation of a new digitally focused media company — the Alabama Media Group, which will include the three newspapers and al.com — will launch this fall to serve readers and advertisers across the state, according to Cindy Martin, who will become president of the new organization.

A similar change was announced earlier in the day by the New Orleans Times-Picayune. The announcement was made in the newspaper’s online edition after The New York Times printed a story about the proposed changes, citing unnamed sources.
