Mrs. Starnes’ third grade class at Andalusia Elementary said it was “just awesome” they get to start off their summer vacation with summer’s biggest holiday – Memorial Day.

Shidamond Davison said she wasn’t quite sure why we celebrated Memorial Day, but she couldn’t wait to hit the road with her family.

“I’m going to stay with my auntie, and we’re going to the beach,” she said.

Liz Whatley said she thought we celebrated the day in honor of Martin Luther King Jr.

“But I do know for sure I’m going to be in the wedding,” Whatley said, but she couldn’t remember exactly who was getting married. “It’s some family friends.”

Joshua Gurley said he knew the day was set aside to “remember people.”

“I’m going spend that time in a hotel in Florida going to Disney World,” he said.

Justin Morrisette said his hot Memorial Day plan included a trip to his grandmothers’ – in Beatrice.

“Then, we’re going to Disney World,” he said.

Kamyrian Battles said the day is for spending time with family, and her group plans to head to Georgia for vacation.

“We’re going to Six Flags and that mountain that has the faces on it,” Battles said. “Then, we’re coming home and going to church. Then, we’re going to Wild Adventures.”

Bay Merrell said we celebrate Memorial Day to thank those people who died for our country.

“And I’m going swimming,” she said.
