Memorial Day weekend turned tragic for a Kinston family as their toddler son remains in critical condition after falling into the family pool and drowning.

Cooper Pierce, the 2-year-old son of Cam and Jessica Pierce, was air lifted to Scared Heart Hospital in Pensacola, Fla., Friday afternoon. Reports indicate the accident occurred just over the Covington County line near Ala. Hwy. 134 and Coffee County Road 427.

Coffee County deputies confirmed a medical call to a residence in reference to a child and a swimming pool. When medical personnel arrived the child was unresponsive; however, he was resuscitated and transported for treatment.

Few details surrounding both the accident and Pierce’s condition were available because of the Memorial Day holiday; however, family and friends reported the child did suffer some brain injury.

A spokesperson from Sacred Heart Hospital said Monday Pierce remained in the children’s intensive care unit.
