County sweeps excel

Zack Stinson and Jay Brewer each tossed two-hitters Saturday and held Excel to only three runs in a doubleheader sweep in 18 and under action at LBWCC.

Stinson led CC’s first game 3-2 victory, and Brewer came in for the second game to help lead the county team to a 13-1 win.

Stinson struck out four batters, and allowed two runs on two hits in the first-game win.

Covington County got on board with two runs in the top of the first inning.

Cody Marler scored on Fernando Torres’ RBI single, and Torres came around on Stinson’s single.

Excel answered with two runs in the bottom half of the inning on a double and single by L. Johnson and L. Turberville, respectively.

The county team scored the go-ahead run in the second inning on an RBI triple from Colter Poole.

It was a “three up and three down” game for Stinson after the first inning as he faced 12 batters.

Poole went 1-for-2 with a triple; Torres went 1-for-1 with a single; and Stinson went 1-for-2 with a single to lead Covington County.

Johnson and Turberville were the only Excel players who had hits.

Covington County scored three runs in the first inning, four runs in the second inning and added six runs in the fourth to force the mercy rule in the second game of the doubleheader.

Brewer struck three batters and allowed two hits and two walks in five innings to help the county team in the win.

Torres hit a two-run double to score Poole and Rhett Cook, and later scored on a sac fly from Marler to get the runs going in the first inning.

With two outs and the bases loaded, Torres singled to score Poole and Cook, and the other two runs came in on an error and a walk.

Covington County scored its six runs in the fourth inning on two hits and two walks to build a 13-0 lead.

Torres went 3-for-3 with two singles and a double to lead Covington County; and Poole went 1-for-3 with a single.

Excel scored its only run in the fifth inning on an error.
