The signs show new business is again happening in Florala.
Monday, city council members approved two sign requests – one for a liquor store and another for a restaurant.
Mayor Robert Williamson said Hilltop Liquors, which opened Monday, and Wild Wild Wayne’s, a restaurant, are located next door in the center of town.
“Our sign ordinance dictates that signs over 32 square-feet must be approved by the council before installation,” he said. “Both these signs met the requirements and were approved.”
Wild Wild Wayne’s, which is located in the old Dem Acres location, is set to open on June 18.
Williamson said the openings are a nice addition to the city’s economic landscape.
“We don’t want empty storefronts,” he said. “With these openings, I think we’ll see a noticeable difference – an increase – in sales tax revenue. To me, that’s a good thing.”
Williamson said a new loan company is set to open next month as well.
“There are lots of great things happening in Florala,” he said.
Williamson said city officials have also begun the process of obtaining quotes to connect the walkways at Florala State Park with the walkway on the Florida side. Funding was secured through a state recreational trails grant.
“And (state department of transportation officials) said the paving of (state Hwy) 55 will start and they’re going to try to get it done toward the end of the month,” he said. “I’ve asked, if possible, if they could have it done before the June 24th weekend, but we’ll have to see.”
