Chances are if you’ve ever called the Andalusia City School board office, you’ve probably heard Sara Mixson’s voice.

The Andalusia native has worked for ACS for the last 10 years as a data specialist and special education secretary, now she’s moving on to her dream.

For “a long time,” Mixson has been working toward her bachelor’s degree in English education, a degree she just completed.

“I started actively working on it, and then in 2005, when I was expecting my daughter, I took a hiatus and had two children,” she said. “Then I went back to school and here we are.”

Mixson said English has always been a love of hers.

“I love English. I love reading, language, words,” she said. “I have had some very good English teachers that have instilled the love in me, and I want to pass it along.”

Mixson graduated from AHS in 1998 and the Andalusia BOE approved her hire at Monday night’s meeting as a ninth grade English teacher.

“I’m very excited,” she said. “I’ll be in a classroom that I had class in. I’m very excited to be working with Mrs. (Cavelle) Jones and Mrs. (Dawn) Thompson. Both are teachers I had.”

Mixson said she’s ecstatic about the opportunity to “go home.”

“The timing could not be better,” she said. “I thank God for that.”

Mixson said she’s working through the summer, and will officially leave her post at the central office at the end of July.

“I’m going to miss my co-workers,” she said. “I’ve never worked with better people. Everyone works so well together. It’s going to be really hard, and I won’t be far away.”

Mixson is married to Andalusia Middle School assistant principal Rob Mixson.
