Well-known sports talk show host Paul Finebaum wasn’t surprised to be greeted by deputies when he arrived at the Kiwanis Community Center in Andalusia Thursday night, thanks to a courtesy call he received.

Finebaum was served with a gag order in the Harvey Updyke trial by local deputies. He said he knew it was coming.

Finebaum was the guest speaker for the LBW Foundation’s annual fundraiser.

Updyke , calling in to Finebaum’s show as “Al,” admitted on the air that he had poisoned the beloved oak trees at Auburn’s Toomer’s Corner long before an investigation into the poisoning began.

Finebaum previously had been asked by prosecutors to testify in the Updyke case on Thursday. Finebaum said Thursday night that he told prosecutors he couldn’t because he was committed to be in Andalusia.

The trial was ended Thursday afternoon after the judge determined the jury couldn’t give Updyke a fair trial.
