Andalusia’s 8-and-under All-Stars finished 1-2 in pool play last weekend at the Cal Ripken State Tournament in Mobile.

The Andalusia All-Stars had to win two games to be able to advance to the bracket portion of the tournament.

“When you get to the state tournament, the competition there is the cream of the crop,” Andalusia coach Shannon Glenn said. “The teams that go to state placed in the top two in district.

“You’re playing competition that’s as good if not better, than what?” he said. “Those guys are getting to see how other teams are performing around the state.”

Andalusia fell to Mims 10-0 in the first game; beat Atmore 6-3 in the second game; and lost 7-2 to Sumter County.

This was Andalusia’s second trip to the state tournament, and the first time it won a game.

Opp finished 2-1 in pool play at the state tournament, and fell in the first game 10-8 of bracket play.

Andalusia isn’t done with baseball action this summer as it will play host to the 2012 Cal Ripken 8 and under Southeast Regional Tournament July 12-15 at Johnson Park.

Up to 20 teams will compete in pool play the first three days.

The top seeds from each different division — North, South, East and West — will play each other in a single elimination bracket tournament on Saturday and Sunday. Sunday’s games will be the semifinals, and the championship game will be at 10 a.m.
