Opp’s 10-year-old All-Stars will battle the heat and good competition this weekend at the Cal Ripken State Tournament in Florence.

The state tournament will be played in pool play the first two days, and then will transition to a single elimination bracket.

Opp is in the “National” league of the tournament. Each team gets to play four games in pool play, and the highest seeds will advance to bracket play.

Opp will play Semmes at 4 p.m., and then Sylacauga on Saturday on TNT Field, where temperatures are expected to reach 102 degrees for the high, according to the National Weather Service.

“We are certainly looking forward to competing in Florence,” Opp 10-year-old coach Michael Smithart said. “Our guys have worked extremely hard, and we think they will represent themselves, and the City of Opp very well.

“It’s going to be a challenge from the competition to the heat, but we’re ready and are looking forward to it,” he said.

On Sunday, Opp will face Southern at 12:30 p.m. on Buffalo Wild Wings Field, and then will play Valley Grande at 8 p.m. on Lumber One Field.

The high on Sunday will be around 101 degrees.

Opp won its district tournament to advance to the state tournament this week.
