Lease agreements to cover airport costs

Two South Alabama Regional Airport Authority lease agreements mean that the cities of Andalusia and Opp, as well as Covington County, won’t need to contribute funds for airport operations beginning in July.

Mayor Earl Johnson told the council Tuesday that the city was notified earlier in the day by airport co-manager Jed Blackwell that a lease agreement with Vector Aerospace to begin paying a portion of the lease on a soon-to-be completed addition to that facility, as well as a lease with DRS for the airport’s twin hangars mean that the authority can manage its cash obligations.

“This is excellent news,” Johnson said. “We have a first-class airport out there, and it’s now paying for itself.”

Johnson said an industrial announcement is expected in August, and that 700 jobs should be added there over the next two years.

In other business, the council:

• Awarded a bid for leasing turf equipment with Beard Equipment.

• Abated property at 210 River Falls St. and 316 Stuart St. for problems with weeds.

• Authorized city attorney Mark Christiansen to participate in non-binding mediation in a civil case against the Andala Building LLC.
