County 14-15s earn state tourney berth

Covington County’s 14-to-15-year-old All-Stars secured a spot at the state tournament with a 6-5 victory over Andalusia Monday night in the district tournament at Crum Foshee Field on the campus of LBWCC.

CC led 5-2 after the fifth inning, but Andalusia came back to tie the game at 5-all.

Covington County scored the game-winning run in the top of the seventh inning, and held on with two runners and two outs in the bottom half of the last inning to get the win.

Andalusia made it to the elimination bracket’s championship game by defeating Kinston 13-11 in the first game of the day.

Andalusia’s All-Stars scored 12 runs in three innings to take a 13-6 lead over Kinston. However, Kinston had a late rally, scoring five runs in the bottom of the seventh to make a late threat.

The state tournament starts July 12 in Monroeville.

Covington County 6, Andalusia 5

Covington County’s Jacob Whatley hit an RBI single in the top of the seventh inning to score Gage Worley and broke the 5-5 tie.

Andalusia got two runners on with two outs, but Colton Elmore hit a short grounder in front of the catcher, and was thrown out at first for the final out of the game.

“I thought our boys played real hard,” Andalusia coach Ben Brannon said. “We showed a lot of guts to be still playing two games. We had some kids that were real tired. They fought hard to the end.

“Covington County made a few more plays,” he said. “I thought the county had a good team. I was proud of the way our kids fought. I wish them the best of luck.”

Gage Worley hit an RBI single to score Daryl George in the first inning to help CC take an early 1-0 lead.

Austin Worley, Gage Worley and Shane Jones scored in the third inning to help CC take a 4-1 lead.

Andalusia’s Conner Hammond scored on errors in the third inning.

In the fourth inning, Andalusia’s Ashton Elmore got a single; and Devan McDuffie got a walk and later scored to cut CC’s lead by two runs at 4-2.

George hit an RBI single in the sixth inning to give CC a 5-2 lead.

Andalusia tied the game in the bottom half of the frame when McDuffie reached on a walk; Jonathon Johnson singled; and Colton Elmore reached on a hit.

Todd Wright got an RBI single, and then two runs scored right after for the tie.

In the top of the seventh, Gage Worley reached on a walk; Jones reached on a fielder’s choice; and Ty Ballard got hit by a pitch to load the bases.

Whatley then hit his RBI single to get the game-winning run.

Gunner Wise pitched six innings, and Jerran Williams came in to relieve for the save.

Andalusia’s Brayden Burkhardt pitched five innings; McDuffie and Ashton Elmore threw one inning each.

Andalusia 13, Kinston 11

Trailing 4-1, Andalusia scored 12 runs in three innings to take a 13-6 lead over Kinston.

Andalusia scored two runs in the fourth inning, four runs in the fifth inning and six runs in the sixth to get the win.

Kinston had a late rally by scoring two runs in the sixth inning and five runs in the seventh to make things interesting.

Johnson had a double and five RBIs to lead Andalusia. Burkhardt went 1-for-4; Riley Eiland went 1-for-3; Taylor Griffin scored two runs; Ashton Elmore went 1-for-3 with a double; McDuffie scored four runs; Colton Elmore went 1-for-3 with a run; Dalton Moore went 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run; and Todd Wright had an RBI.

Kinston’s T.J. Glass went 2-for-3 with two RBIs; and Eli Wood went 2-for-4 with two RBIs.
