Opp’s 10-and-under All-Stars finished runner up at the 2012 Cal Ripken State Tournament in Florence on Tuesday night.

In the third inning, Opp trailed 4-0 to eventual winner Semmes, but fought back and actually took a 7-6 lead in the top of the sixth inning, coach Michael Smithart said.

“We were three outs away from it,” Smithart said.

Smirthart said Semmes put some “plays” together, and scored two runs to win 8-7 in extra innings for the state championship.

“They put some plays together, and we made a couple mistakes and let them tie it up,” he said. “Our kids fought hard. They represented Opp well.”

Opp beat Sweet Water Tuesday morning to gain a berth to the championship game against Semmes.

Monday night, Opp beat Mims 12-6, and earlier that day, they beat Sourthern 12-2.

Smithart said despite the result, the boys played great.

“We’re just proud of our guys,” he said. “Our guys played outstanding baseball for four days.

“I think some bright days are ahead for us,” he said.
