This Packer Avenue home was completely destroyed by fire Sunday.

Local authorities responded to two fires Sunday – including one that left an Andalusia woman homeless.

When members of the Andalusia Fire Department arrived shortly after 3 a.m. Sunday, they found Betty Hattaway’s Packer Avenue home engulfed in flames.

Hattaway, who was inside the home at the time of the fire but removed by a Good Samaritan prior to the department’s arrival, was not injured.

Once firefighters arrived on scene, the fire was quickly extinguished; however, fire officials deemed the home and its contents “a complete loss.” Damage wasn’t contained to the property. Heat from the fire melted the siding on the home next door, and owners said Hattaway escaped “with only the clothes on her back.”

On Monday, spots inside the home were still smoldering. The exact cause of the blaze is still under investigation.

A second fire was also reported Sunday – this one causing minor damage to a home on the dirt-road portion of Prestwood Bridge Road.

Firefighters said the homeowner, an oil-field worker, was not at home at the time of the fire. Neighbors noticed smoke coming from the home and called 911. Luckily, damage was contained to one room, the firefighter said.

The fire is believed to have been electrical in nature.
