CIA: Area has low crime rates

Communities in Covington County was a safe place to live in 2011, the recently-released Crime In Alabama report shows.

Compiled by the Alabama Criminal Justice Information Center and available in its entirety at http://acjic.alabama.gov, the report is the most thorough CIA publication to date, thanks to new electronic reporting systems.

Andalusia Police Chief Wilbur Williams presented city statistics to the council Tuesday night; county and other stats were pulled directly from the report.

Williams said the APD is among approximately 350 agencies to report known offenses. When compared to communities of like size, Andalusia has both low crime rates and high clearance rates for offenses, he said.

 

Of the crimes included in the report:

 

Homicide – 1 total

(includes attempted homicide)

• One case reported in Andalusia, which was cleared.

Statewide, the clearance rate is 67 percent.

 

Rape – 9 total

• 7 cases reported in county, 14 percent cleared

• 1 case reported in Andalusia, cleared

• 1 case reported in Florala, cleared

Statewide, the clearance rate is 46 percent.

 

Robbery – 6 total

• 4 reported in Andalusia, 75 percent cleared

• 2 reported in Opp, none cleared

Statewide, the clearance rate is 36 percent.

 

Assault – 58 total

• 21 reported in county, 38 percent cleared

• 25 reported in Andalusia, 80 percent cleared

• 5 reported in Opp, 20 percent cleared

• 1 reported in Gantt, cleared

• 1 reported in Lockhart, not cleared

Statewide, the clearance rate is 44 percent.

 

Burglary – 236 total

• 108 reported in county, 14 percent cleared

• 90 reported in Andalusia, 43 percent cleared

• 27 repoted in Opp, 7 percent cleared

• 9 reported in Florala, 11 percent cleared

• 1 reported in Lockhart, not cleared

• 1 reported in River Falls, cleared

Statewide, the clearance rate is 15 percent.

 

Larceny – 766 total

• 205 reported in county, 21 percent cleared

• 379 reported in Andalusia, 54 percent cleared

• 131 reported in Opp, 2 percent cleared

• 33 reported in Florala, 24 percent cleared

• 7 reported in Gantt, 71 percent cleared

• 1 reported in Red Level, not cleared

• 7 reported in Lockhart, 29 percent cleared

• 1 reported in River Falls, 100 percent cleared

Statewide, the clearance rate is 22 percent.

 

Motor Vehicle Thefts – 50 total

• 22 reported in county, 5 percent cleared

• 21 reported in Andalusia, 81 percent cleared

• 7 reported in Florala, 14 percent cleared

Statewide, the clearance rate is 23 percent.

 

In Andalusia, 2011 total activity included:

• 2,018 incident/offense reports

• 679 arrests

• 264 roadway accidents (private property accidents are not included in this number)

• 18,853 calls for service answered

• 1,510 animal-related calls

•1,885 animals taken in at the animal shelter

There are 18 sex offenders currently registered in Alabama. Five are employed within the city limits. State law prohibits registered sex offenders from working within 2,000 feet of a school or day care facility.
