Franklin Lewis Shurford
Franklin Lewis Shuford of Opp passed away Tues., July 17, 2012, at Andalusia Regional Hospital.
He was born on Feb. 7, 1936, in Hamilton , Ga., to the late Lewis and Inez Shuford. He was preceded in death by his sister, Betty Day.
He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Janet Carol Shuford (Salter) of Opp; his seven children, Darcey Ansley (Floyd) of Atlanta, Kathleen Johnston (Dan) of Chesterfield, Va., Franklin L. Shuford, Jr. (Barbara) of Mobile, Robert Shuford of Daleville, Frank Shuford III (Darla) of Olive Branch, Miss., Kristy White (Charles) of Andalusia, and Janet Turner (Steve) of Opp; his grandchildren, Jessica, Kathleen, and Thomas Ansley, Aaron Turner (Johnstone), Daniel, Zachary, and Courtney Johnstone, John Frank Shuford, Caleb and Hudson Shuford, Taylor and Madison White; Breanna, Stevie, and Betty Lynn Turner; and one great-grandchild, Isaac Turner.
He attended Auburn University and worked as a civil engineer for Eglin Air Force Base before medically retiring in 1992. He also retired after 34 years as a lieutenant colonel in the National Guard.
He coached girl’s softball, boy’s baseball, and midget and termite football for the city of Opp for more than 20 years. He was a former Civitan. He served on the Covington County Water Board and was known to the nurses at Andalusia Regional Hospital as “The Candyman.”
He was avid about Auburn football and Atlanta Braves baseball. He was a caring husband and father. His grandchildren were his world.
Visitation will be held at Wyatt Funeral Home tonight from 5 to 7 p.m.
Graveside service will be at Peaceful Acres in Opp, Sat., July 21, at 10 a.m.
