FRANKLIN LEWIS SHUFORD

Franklin Lewis Shuford of Opp, passed away Tues., July 17, 2012, at Andalusia Regional Hospital.

He was born on Feb. 7, 1936, in Hamilton, Ga., to the late Lewis and Inez Shuford. He was preceded in death by his sister, Betty Day.

He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Janet Carol Shuford (Salter) of Opp; his seven children, Darcey Ansley (Floyd) of Atlanta, Kathleen Johnston (Dan) of Chesterfield, Va., Franklin L. Shuford, Jr. (Barbara)  of Mobile, Robert Shuford of Daleville, Frank Shuford III (Darla) of Olive Branch, Miss., Kristy White (Charles) of Andalusia, and Janet Turner (Steve) of Opp; his grandchildren, Jessica, Kathleen, and Thomas Ansley, Aaron Turner (Johnstone), Daniel, Zachary, and Courtney Johnstone, John Frank Shuford, Caleb and Hudson Shuford, Taylor and Madison White; Breanna, Stevie, and Betty Lynn Turner; and one great-grandchild, Isaac Turner.

He attended Auburn University and worked as a civil engineer for Eglin Air Force Base before medically retiring in 1992.  He also retired after 34 years as a lieutenant colonel in the National Guard.

He coached girl’s softball, boy’s baseball and midget and termite football for the city of Opp for more than 20 years. He was a former Civitan. He served on the Coving-ton County Water Board and was known to the nurses at Andalusia Regional Hospital as “The Candyman.”

He was avid about Auburn football and Atlanta Braves baseball. He was a caring husband and father.  His grandchildren were his world.

Graveside service will be at Peaceful Acres in Opp, today, Sat., July 21, at 10 a.m.

 

EMMA BROGDEN

Emma Brogden, 82, of Birmingham, died Thurs., July 19, 2012, in a Birmingham nursing facility.

Funeral services will be held at noon, today, Sat., July 21, at Foreman Brown-Service Funeral Home with the Rev. Jerry Turner officiating. Interment will follow at Andalusia Memorial Cemetery.

Visitation will be after 11 a.m. today at Foreman’s.

She is survived by her daughter, Debra Taylor of Pensacola, Fla.; grandchildren, Kimberly Geisler of Birmingham and Krisinda Peterson of Pensacola, Fla.; and great-grandchild, Emma Elizabeth Geisler.

 

JOAN HEIENS HERRING

Joan Heiens Herring, 77, of Andalusia, died Wed., July 18, 2012, in a Pensacola, Fla., hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Sun., July 22, at Foreman Brown-Service Funeral Home with Minister Eddie Boggus and Jeff Ledbetter officiating. Interment will follow at Cedar Grove Cemetery.

Visitation will be after 1 p.m. at Foreman’s.

She is survived by daughters, Jill (Harry) Smith of Andalusia and Joy Herring Newsome of Gainesville, Fla.; three grandchildren, Cole Smith, Cameron Smith and Chad Newsome; and brothers, Bill Heiens of Witchita, Kan., David (Ramona) Heiens of Abilene, Kan.

Pallbearers will be Harry Smith, Cole Smith, Cameron Smith, Jeff Ledbetter, David Heiens and Carl Newsome.
