Sales tax collections throughout the county were up slightly in June while holding steady for the fiscal year.

County administrator Brenda Petty said the totals, which represent sales in May and remitted in June, totaled $694,817 – a more than $2,000 increase from April’s total of $692,799.

“It’s just a little bit up, which is a good thing,” Petty said. “But if you look at the year-to-date totals, we’re down a little more than a quarter of a percent.”

Petty said year-to-date collections totaled $5,106,296, which was down from the total for the same period last year at $5,120,241.

With the exception of November’s remittances, each month’s totals were higher than the same period last year, according to the RDS sales tax summary for the county.

Florala also experienced a more than $2,000 increase in monthly collections.

City clerk Kathy Rathel said the city collected $34,850 in June for May 2012 sales, up from last June’s total of $32,376.

“Our current year-to-date receipts are $274,290 for 2012,” she said. “Last year this time, it was $291,974, so we are $17,684 under last years collections, but hopefully we will continue to see increases like this month since we have had several new businesses open recently.”
