Dockets for the Aug. 27 trial week at the Covington County Courthouse are stacked with a “who’s who” of criminal cases – including those against former sheriff’s candidate and a former county commissioner.

Kevin Owens, who ran unsuccessfully for sheriff in 2006, is set for trial in two separate sex abuse cases, with two separate victims, from 2007; however, it is believed that case will be continued until next month.

Also on the docket is the case against Kent Colquett and his wife, Cynthia.

Colquett served as the District 1 commissioner for 12 years before losing in the 2008 primary election to David Ellis. He previously served as an Opp councilman for 12 years, before running for the commission seat. He and his wife are charged with first-degree theft of property after being indicted by a grand jury for allegedly stealing an estimated $230,000 in fuel from an Opp distributing company.

Each of those cases is slated to be heard by Judge Ashley M. McKathan.

Judge Lex Short’s docket include the capital murder case against Michael Dale Barbaree, who is accused of bludgeoning a man to death and setting his home on fire, with the man’s bed-bound wife inside in May 2009. The case is being prosecuted by the state attorney general’s office.

However, Judge Short said the case will not be tried this month.

District Attorney Walt Merrell said the dockets would continue to change up until trial week begins as attorneys negotiate pleas and file motions to continue in cases.
