Andalusia’s newest OBGYN jokes that the hardest part about her job is working with a partner who is an Alabama fan and another partner who is an LSU fan.

Opp native Dawn Henderson, who went to “the best university in the state – Auburn University” said she’s really enjoyed working at Covington Obstetrics & Gynecology with Drs. Michael Wells and Joseph Browning, a job she began earlier this summer.

Henderson originally studied pharmacy at AU, and practiced at Larry’s Prescriptions for eight years – another job she said she really enjoyed.

“I loved the interaction with the people,” she said.

Then she decided to pursue her medical degree from Nova Southeastern in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

“I really wanted to be more involved in direct care,” she said. “When I completed medical school, I was interested in surgical care and OBGYN made sense to me.”

She completed her residency in obstetrics and gynecology at the University of South Alabama in Mobile.

“I really enjoy the obstetrics part of it,” she said. “It’s thrilling. It’s very happy and fulfilling. It’s a very rewarding area of medicine.”

Henderson also said he likes that in her field, if there’s a problem, it can usually be fixed.

She previously practiced in Florida until she moved back to Opp this summer to be closer to her parents, Dallas and Olene Henderson.

“I’m really enjoying being back,” she said. “I’m a southern girl. I’m an outdoors girl. I like fishing, hiking, camping and scuba diving.”

Henderson said she hopes help grow the practice, and have a more comprehensive women’s facility in Andalusia.

“I also want to become more active in the community,” she said. “I want to do anything to help educate women, whether it be with preventative screens or just education and communication.”
