Nine employees from Covington Electric Cooperative left the Sanford office about 6:30 a.m. Friday en route for Franklinton, La.
The CEC employees will be assisting employees in the Washington-St. Tammany Electric Cooperative. The Louisiana Cooperative has 51,075 meters, and when the local crew left, 24,205, or more than half, were without power.
CEC’s Ed Short said the local crew was prepared to stay in Louisiana a week to 10 days.
Crews from all but three of Alabama’s 22 electric cooperatives are working to help restore power in Mississippi and Louisiana over the Labor Day weekend after Hurricane Isaac knocked out electricity to thousands.
Neither PowerSouth nor the City of Andalusia had been asked to send crews as of Friday afternoon.
