The request was vague.

Would Roger Powell consider doing a collaborative piece to be auctioned at this tonight’s Art off the Wall, an annual fundraiser for the Lower Alabama Arts Coalition and the Covington Arts Council? Further, would his family members be the collaborators?

Powell said that when he agreed, he had no idea what the end result would be. He knew the painting would include the high school, but he wanted it to be different from the paintings of structures for which he is well known.

The result is a three-panel painting of Andalusia High School with a graduate in each of the 72 windows. There is a marching band and a homecoming float in the foreground, a ROTC group at the flagpole, cheerleaders on the front steps, and a former coach on the lawn in a letterman’s sweater.

Think Shelby Searcy, James Arthur Wilson, Mildred Hart, Flora Rolland, Will Sconiers, Manny Russo, Kendall Taylor, Nico Johnson, Richard Robertson, Ricky Jones, and George Barnes, to name a few.

It also has the words to the fight song and the alma mater; pieces of baccalaureate and commencement programs; and the Pledge of Allegiance.

Powell said that his wife and daughters, Cathy, Allyn and Lauren Powell, as well as his nephew, Kyle Powell, have each contributed to the work.

The painting will be auctioned tonight, Sat., Sept. 15, at Springdale during Art off the Wall, which begins at 6. Tickets, which are $35 each, are available at Brooks Hardware, Ansley Place, and at the door.

Art off the Wall also will feature a silent auction, dinner buffet and live entertainment.
