Brady Walker and Erica Ziglar are among the cast of a play being held to raise money for a Kinston woman.

A group of Covington County students are bringing a bit of “Spirit” to a fundraiser for a Kinston woman in need of a lung transplant.

The group, who is comprised of Courtney Blue, Morgan Blue, Cord Lovell, Haiden Moore, Hailey Cook, Erica Ziglar, Brady Walker and Christian Henderson – are also members of Bethel Baptist Church. There, they attend services with Sherri Moore and her family.

“We’re all very close at church,” said Walker, who organized the fundraiser, is acting in the play and serves as the production’s director. He is a student at LBW Community College. “And when Mrs. Sherri was diagnosed, we did benefits, but there’s always a need for more.

“I came up with the idea to do a play,” he said. “It’s fun, and I thought it was a great way to raise money.”

One such fundraiser – a spaghetti supper – helped to cover the cost of the building rental fee.

Set in the Happy Hollow Rest Home, “Spirit” is comedy and “a moving piece about friendship and making the best out of not-so ideal situation,” said Ziglar, a fellow LBWCC student and production actor. “It is so funny.”

The show is a group of delightful characters, all of which want more from life than their restricted existence allows. It follows 83 year-old Clara – played by Ziglar – and “her” best friend Esther – played by Walker – and hula lessons, séances and sending out for pepperoni pizza – much to the delight of fellow residents, and the dismay of the manager.

“It’s so great to have a cast that is willing to donate their time for this worthy cause,” Walker said.

The production will be held on Saturday at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. at the LBW Community College MacArthur campus. Tickets are $5 and available at the door or by contacting Walker at 804-6852 or Ziglar at 488-0695.
