Organizers of the Covington County Relay for Life are hoping an early start will bring not only more team participants but also more money for the cause.

Larry Brown, the 2013 Relay chairman, said the kickoff for the event will be held Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Covington Electric Cooperative.

“This meeting is for teams – old and new – who are interested in participating in Relay,” Brown said. “Last year, we had a down year as far as teams go. There were only 17. We hope to beat that by getting 30.”

Relay for Life is an organized, overnight community fundraising walk designed to serve as a culmination of months of fundraising to fight against cancer.

This year’s theme is “Playing for a Cure,” Brown said.

“Think classic games, board games and TV shows,” he said of the night. “This year, we’re going back old school style. After all, it was way more fun back then. We wanted to design an event where teams could interact with one another and make the night very fun.”

The fundraising goal is set at $105,000, he said.

“Last year, we raised $103,000, and we wanted to keep this year’s goal simple,” Brown said. “That’s why we only went up $2,000. We don’t want people to overstretch – both in working toward the goal by fundraising and in terms of people donating.”

The 2013 Relay for Life event will be held on April 26.

“Let’s just say that plans are ongoing for that night,” Brown said. “I think this year for entertainment, we might have a talent show. But, really, we hope that people take to the whole game atmosphere. Think ‘Family Feud,’ and interactive games. We want to make if fun for everyone who comes out.”

Brown said those with questions should attend the Tuesday meeting or contact the committee via Facebook at “Covington County Relay for Life.”
