Florala seeks new council member

Florala is in need of a new District 5 councilperson.
Councilwoman Gloria Cassady ran unopposed in the Aug. 28 municipal election; however, she was never officially sworn into office – meaning the position is now vacant.
Mayor Robert Willi-amson said state law required all municipal officers to be sworn in by midnight on Nov. 5, but Cassady, citing personal reasons, elected not to participate in the ceremony.
“So, what that means is that district needs a new councilperson,” Williamson said. “We’re going to follow the same procedure we used when (former District 3 councilman) Danny Thames resigned. We’ll announce the opening at our Monday meeting for any interested applicants to contact city hall.”
Williamson said that list will be presented at the Dec. 10 meeting, and council members will have one week to obtain public input.
The new councilperson will be announced on Dec. 17, he said.
Meetings are held at city hall on Wall Street at 6:30 p.m. Those interested in the position can contact city hall at 334-858-3612. One must reside within the district limits to hold the position.
